A flower in a dream

What is that word? The sky and the earth is just one root. Including myself, everything is of one root. Everything in the world is one body with me. I don’t understand what the words mean. So can you explain the words to me?"

And the master Namjeon replied to him in a very subtle way. "It’s like a man who sees a flower in a dream, a branch of flowers in a dream." What does that mean? Is there anything that comes to your mind when you hear that word? He could say, it’s just a dream, but it’s a little bit different – the expression is a little bit different. In the dream, a man sees a branch of flowers in the dream – it’s a different expression than just a dream. That means that he’sexplaining the dream in detail. When he gets out of the dream, everything disappears. Everything in the Universe is of one body in the dream."

Master Namjeon tried his best to explain in an easy way. Can you understand that? In the dream, a branch of flowers is the Universe, and the object that sees is me. He mentioned about myself that sees in the dream and the Universe that is seen in the dream. Myself, and the flower that is seen. In other words, subject and object are the same thing – they are not different. Object and subject, all of those are all are part of a dream, they are not different.

When I first heard Namjeon said, I thought to myself that he could not say it was just a dream. But he tried to explain in more detail about a man seeing a branch of flowers. Later on, when I think it over, Master Namjeon tried his best with kindness, That was enough on that subject.

남전스님에게 그 당시 대부되는 육황대부가 가서 질문을 했어!

"남전 스님! 요새 아주 귀한 말이 돌아다니는데 그 말이 도저히 이해가 안 됩니다. 그 말이 뭐냐……. ‘천지와 여와 동근이요! 만물이 여와 일체다!’ 라는 말이요."

천지가 나와 더불어 뿌리다 같다. 같은 뿌리에서 났다.. 이 소리지! ‘만물이 여와 일체라!’ 만 가지 물건이 나하고 한 몸이다. 라는 소리인데 대부가

"그 말이 도저히 무슨 소리인지 모르겠습니다!" 그 말을 남전스님이 참~ 묘한 말로 답을 했어요.

"사람이 꿈에 한줄기 꽃을 보는 거와 같다!" 꿈이라면 될 건데, 사람이 한줄기 꽃을 보는 거와 같다!

뭐가 그 말에 척 오는 것이 없어요? 그냥 꿈이라고 하는 것과 조금 다르죠? "꿈에 사람이 한줄기 꽃을 보는 거와 같다!" 말하자면 꿈을 자세히 설명한 거죠.

꿈이라 면은 아까 얘기 하듯이 꿈을 깨놓고 보면 있는 것도 없는 것도 다 없어 졌다! 하는 그 것만 가지고는 우주에 만 가지 물건이 다 나와 한 몸이라꼬.. 뿌리가 같은 뿌리라꼬.. 하는 답변이 미흡하죠.

그런데 남전스님이 그 말을 아주 알아듣기 쉽게 얘기 했어요! "꿈에 한줄기 꽃을 보는 거와 같다" 한줄기 꽃은 만물이요! 보는 것은 나다 이기요! 꿈에 보는 나와 보이는 만물을 딱 얘기 했잖아요!

보는 나나 보이는 꽃이나 주관이나 객관이나 모든 것이 다 꿈이다. 이거죠! 처음에 내가 그 남전 스님의 답하는 것을 보고, 처음 들을 때는 꿈이라면 다 되는데, 무슨 꿈속에 어쩌고저쩌고 할 필요가 있나.. 라고 생각했죠! 그런데 나중에 생각해보니까! 아주 절실한 말을 알아듣게끔 얘기한 거요!
